Font Layout on Table of Contents

I am creating a table of contents from a Microsoft template. The second
level of the table of contents is in small-caps which was pre-formatted on
the template. I tried changing this pre-formatted text to be lowercase, but
nothing will change. Now when I close the document and re open in it, the
second level text will be lowercase and when I start typing or doing other
things it will switch back to the pre-formatted small-caps text. How can I
change this text and keep it from switching back and forth between text
formats? Thanks

You need to modify the TOC 2 style. Although TOC styles are set to update
automatically, I find that that works reliably only for paragraph, not font,
formatting.

How would I go about modifying the TOC 2 style? Pardon my newbeness. lol

I was hoping you wouldn't ask! It depends a lot on what version of Word you
have and (to some extent) whether the TOC entries are hyperlinked. In some
versions of Word, it's as simple as going to Format | Style; in others, you
can right-click on a paragraph and choose Style... from the shortcut menu.
But in most recent versions (Word 2002, 2003, 2007), it is ridiculously
difficult to modify a TOC style in an existing TOC.

Assuming for the moment that you have Word 2002 or 2003, see Shauna Kelly's
article at http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/ModifyAStyle.html. The TOC
style will *not* be displayed in the Styles & Formatting task pane even if
you display "All styles" (which is laughable), so you will have to use
"Custom" to access it, as described in Shauna's article. If you have Word
2007, post back for further instructions.

Lol, Well I have Word 2007. Thank again for your help, I really appreciate

Of course! In Word 2007, display the Style Pane, click on Options, and, in
the Style Pane Options dialog, set "Select styles to show" to "All styles."
Unlike in Word 2003, this will actually display *all* styles, and you can
find the appropriate TOC style and choose Modify. Don't forget to set the
Style Pane back to Recommended (or some other) display setting after
modifying the style.
