Ghantt View Start-Up date

K

My Project Start date under project information in 5/16/06, however when I
open the schedule it opens the ghantt and starts in on 2/15/04. Why is this
happening?
How can I fix it to show the ghantt bars and view to open on 5/16/06.

Please help!!!!

Hi KG,

Try sorting the project by start date and see if you have any tasks
going back to 2/15/04.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

I have exactly the same problem. Project start date is May 06 but the Gantt
opens at Sept 04. If I click once anywhere on the horizontal scroll bar
except the arrows it immediately jumps to where it should be. I thought it
was due to the creation date as mine are templates from before I joined the
company but that doesn't seem to be the case judging from the file
properties/general tab. There are no tasks or actions of any kind in 2004.
This has also become an excuse for PM's to debunk the use of these templates
because of what is afterall just a formatting issue. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Hi Andy,

I'm sorry, I have been unable to reproduce the problem. When I create a
project based upon a template, the Gantt chart view opens with the
original template start date. When I go to Project > Project
Information and supply the new project start date, the Gantt chart
automatically adjusts to the new start date. Saving, closing, and
re-opening the new project file opens the Gantt chart view as it was
saved. If I scroll to a new date, save, close, and re-open, the view
opens again, as it was saved.

Try the following:
Open your project
Select the first task in the list and click on the Go to Selected Task
toolbar button on the Standard toolbar to scroll the Gantt Chart bars
into view.
Save the file.
Close the file.
Re-open the file.
Does it open as it was saved, with the bars in view?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks Andy for letting me know that I am not going crazy. Julie I have
verified no tasks are prior to the project start date and I have also tried
your recommendation as to saving after clicking the go to selected tasks and
it still does not work.

I am just dealing with a corrupt file, or does anyone have a suggestion that
may be helpful?

Julie,

I have narrowed it done to what I think may be causing the view dates to
start on 2/15/04 as opposed to when the first task starts on 5/16/06. The
project was created by using an existing template. When going to start a
project I use a standard template that has views, calendars, etc... tailored
to our business. This template was created some time ago. I opened the
template and look at the properties under the file menu and seen that the
file showed todays date in the created field and in the printed field appears
the 2/15/04 date. Its seems as though this date is overriding the
information used in the new project.

Is this supposed to happen?
What does the printed date on the statistics tab tell us?

Please let me know what you think is going on?

Thanks,

KG

Hi KG,

Let's take a step back and answer a few questions:

1) What version and Service Pack of Project are you using?
2) When you say the project was created using an existing template, how
are you creating the project file based upon the template? When I
create a new file based on a template (File > New in the menu) I do not
see any information on the Properties page other than the created date
(today).
3) If you take the new file based on the template and Save As a template
file, do you get any prompts about removing any tracking data, resource
cost data, etc?
4) If you then create a new file based upon the newly created template,
go to Project > Project Information and change the start date of the
project, does the Gantt Chart view adjust as it should?

If you like and if the information is not proprietary, zip the project
and email it to me at:

passport 6847 at maine dot rr dot com.

Remove the spaces and replace the at with an @ and the dot with a .

I'll take a look and see if I can figure it out.

1.) Microsoft Office Project Professional 2003 SP2
2.) When starting a new project I select file open and then a task pane is
opened on the left side of the screen. The options for Templates are either
templates on office online, on my computer, and on my website. I iniatially
created a .MPT file and save it on my computer as an enterprise template. I
open this and start from there. This is the file in which at the point in
time it is open, under file properties (stats tab) it gives the date to the
right of created as time now and under the printed column it says 2-5-2004
(which is the date the ghantt opens up at).
3.) If I save the file as a .mpt I do not get any prompts.
4.) The newly created template which was copied from the one above still
starts the ghantt at the 2-5-2004.

Hopefully that clarifies some issues and with assist you in answering the
questions posted. If not, then I can look into sending you a mpp file.

Thanks for your help.

Hi KG,

Thanks for the information. Are you connected to Project Server? You
note an "enterprise template" and Project Professional which are usually
used in conjunction with Project Server. I am not terribly familiar
with Project Server but do want to eliminate that as a potential
complication. I am also using Project 2003 Professional SP2 (no Project
server connections) and have been unable to reproduce the issue you are
seeing.

You mentioned in an earlier post that the template has some customized
views and I assume the Gantt view is one of the customized . As an
experiment if you create a new project based upon the Standard template
(blank). Copy the Gantt view from the existing project file to the new
project file. Set a start date of today. Does the Gantt view adjust?

Again, sorry to put you through so many hoops but I am trying to narrow
down the potential source of the problem. I'm not sure if it may not be
worthwhile to recreate the template by copying the data, calendars, view
etc. to a new project, saving it as a template. (Most likely the answer
you didn't want to hear, but the problems you are reporting are not
"normal" and would lead me think it may be a corruption in the template
file.)

Again, feel free to send me the file if you would like.
