how do I filter resources to show availability for task

When scheduling several resources on a large project, I need to know the best
way to see which resource is available for each task. Most of my resources
are interchangable. I saw a brief post that referenced using a resource
filter, but I can't figure out how to do it.

Mareveli,
I'm not sure how a filter can help because you really want timescaled
data, that is, which hours, days, weeks, etc. any given resource is
available. In that regard, take a look at the Resource Usage view and
collapse it so only resources show (i.e. no assignment rows), Then
display the Resource Availability timescaled data in the tabular data on
the right.

I guess if you wanted to limit the data to a select group of resources,
you could use a filter for that.

Hope this helps.

Hi Mareveli,

If you are using Project 2002 or Project 2003, in the Assign Resources
dialog box you may filter the list of resource showing only resource
from a specific group or who are available to work a specific number of
hours. See the help topic called "Assign a resource" for detailed
information.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks. This is probably a stupid question, but how do I collapse the
assignment rows. Sorry if it's obvious, but it's Friday night....

Hi Mareveli ,

Click the little minus sign (-) to the left of the resource name. Or select
all, and click the minus sign in the toolbar.

Mareveli,
You're welcome. It looks like Mike woke up before me.

In addition to the responses posted so far, there is an alternate method
that I think would work for you. Assuming that you have set an estimated
Duation for each task in your Project, do the following:

1. Select a task to which you wish to assign a resource
2. Click the Assign Resources button on the Standard toolbar
3. In the Assign Resources dialog, click the + sign to the left of
"Resource list options"
4. Select the "Available to work" option
5. Enter the number of hours the resource must work on the task in the
"Available to work" field

Microsoft Project displays only those resources who have the availability to
work on the selected task. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone, this was all really helpful! This community has saved my
life! Ok...a little dramatic, but it has definitely saved my sanity at times
: )
