Moving template files

Jean

I have personal templates ( .dot)generated in Word 2000
and saved in 98SE. I now need to move them to my new
computer running XP Professional. In 98SE they were in
Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates. What is the
equivalant destination in the XP machine so I can load
these templates? Thanks.

Hi,

There is no way someone else can tell you where you put your wallet when
they are not in the same room with you. The same is true of your template
locations. We could give some guesses. However, we can tell you how you can
find your templates folder. An easy way to find it is to search for
normal.dot in Windows (use the F3 key when the "My Computer" window is
open). When you find normal.dot, right-click on the file and select "Open
containing folder." You can put your templates there.

Alternatively, you could designate some folder (outside the one holding
normal.dot) as your "workgroup templates folder" and put them there.
Tools > Options > File Locations
This will also reveal the location of your user templates folder (and let
you change it).

For more on the different kinds of templates and locations of templates
folders see http://addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm.

You may also want to move your old AutoCorrect file if you customized it.
See http://word.mvps.org/faqs/customization/ExportAutocorrect.htm for
instructions and a utility you can use to move your AutoCorrect entries to
your new computer.
