Off Centre Printing of .pub docs

Hi

I am using Publisher 2000 for producing documents. Unfortunately, even
though I set the document up with equal borders all round they always print
slightly (approx 2mm) to the left. I have tried the program on two computers
(one with ME and the other with XP) and get the same results. I have also
tried to print on four different printers, all with the same results.
If anyone has any ideas I would be most grateful.

What are the documents? If they are text boxes what margin have you set in the text
box for the left? Is it equal to the right?
This is not a Publisher issue...

Hi Mary thanks for the reply.
I get the problem with any document that I produce in Publisher, i.e. if I
just place a rectangle on the page with a one inch margin all round, the
left side margin prints narrower than the right. I am assuming this to be a
Publisher issue because it happens on any machine that I have tried it on
using any version of Windows and any printer (inkjet or laser). Also, the
problem did not arise until I upgraded from Publisher 98 to Pub 2000.

Send the rectangle to the back. Leaving it in front is wrapping the text to fit.

I get this effect with only a rectangle on the document, no text etc. I also
get it when I print a document previously created in Pub 98, it printed OK
until I made the update to Pub 2000.

Eric this is a totally unknown issue in any version of Publisher. There are
no known printing issues in any version of Publisher. Your issues will be
with your printer driver.
Have you checked the website of your printer manufacturer if they have a
later version for your model.
If you have installed that, and you still have issues, post back with the
make, model and printer driver version.

This problem may be totally unknown to you but I have experience of it on
the following combinations of set-up:-

Computer x running Windows XP
Computer y running Windows ME
Computer z running Windows XP

Each machine tried with the following printers:-

Canon s9000
HP 2000C
HP2500C
Brother HL 5050
Magicolor 2300DL

I stopped using Publisher 2000 some time ago for this reason but my wife has
some 4000+ documents, many originally created in Publisher 98. When printed
from Pub98 there were no problems, it was only when printing these Pub98
documents out after upgrading to Pub2000 that the problem arose. I can not
accept that there can be a problem with 5 different printer drivers, if this
were the case I would get the same problem with other software but I don't.
I successfully use PagePlus9, Coral Draw, Photoshop and many other packages
without any problem.

JoAnn-

See my previous posting, also the Magicolor 2300DL is a new printer (day
before yesterday), I have had this problem for some thing like 3 years, on
several machines running various printers.

Eric,
This has to be how you are setting up the publication. I have used Publisher in all
its versions and this issue has never happened.
Things to try:

Go to the arrange menu and reset the margins.
Group all the items in a document and paste to a new publication.

The only time you will get this shrink with Publisher 2000 is with certain
imagesetters.

I will do as you suggest but surely, if the fault was with the printer
driver it would have the same effect on documents created using other
software i.e. PagePlus, Coral Draw, Photoshop etc.? Also, when I upgraded
from Pub98 to Pub2000 I didn't change my printer driver but the previously
created documents (which printed OK on Pub98) began printing off centre...
to me this points directly to Pub2000.

Hi Mary-

I have to say that this is not the my first experience of DTP, prior to
Windows 3.1 I was producing newsletters in MSDOS and rattling them out on a
noisy old Epson dot matrix printer, that of course included writing in all
of the printer codes too. Also, if the problem has something to do with the
publication set-up, how come they printed out OK before the upgrade to
Pub2000?
There is no shrinkage, just a 2mm shift to the left.

Not necessarily. As I said the newer versions of Publisher (2000 and
newer) are very much printer driver dependent.

Not quite...
The OLDER versions of Publisher (2000 and earlier) are printer-dependent,
and change the publication according to the printer you are using
Publisher 2002 and later are printer-independent - the publication will be
the same on screen, no matter what printer you are using. But they are very
demanding on the printer driver when you are printing, hence the need for
the most up-to-date drivers.

Every 98 publication saved its printer information with the file. Do you get a
message about not finding a printer when you open the old files?
About drivers,
On the Canon web site there is a driver for the S9000 with a March 22, 2004 timestamp
for XP.

E

Eric Pickering

Hi Mary -

Thanks for that. Had a look at the Canon web site and the only PRINTER
driver I can see is the version that I am using... 1.61 dated 17th September
2003 although there are updates for other pieces of s9000 software.

Well, Eric, it was on the USA site... I forgot you were in the UK. Are the drivers
compatible?

E

Eric Pickering

Only one way to find out!!! I'll let you know (but not tonight... it's
heading for midnight here and I don't want to turn into a pumpkin!).

How the hell can you call it 'poor phrasing' when it was 100% incorrect.

Admit you made a big stuff-up.

Mary the Blitishers in the UK will be at least 5 years behind in drivers as
they are 20 years + behind in everything else.
Talk about a backward broken down country that nearly everything is
vandalised.

Erik if you go to http://groups.google.com/ and do a Search on Google Groups
you will find you are the only person in the world that has managed to come
up with this issue.
I think you need a therapist first, followed by an optician.
