Openning Excel Documents

wwe have been experiencing an issue with only certain workbooks in MS EXCEL 2004.

When I try to open a workbook that I have been using for ages, the splash screen for excel showing that the document is opening appears and then nothing else happens. The document does not open. Yet if I go to another computer and open the same document it opens up just fine.

This all started around the time of the latest update to Office (3/14/08)

Anyone got any ideas.

I uninstalled the office program and before I updated it to get to the latest version I tried opening the document and it worked.

If I could go back to the last version of Office I would dothat, but I am unsure that Entourage would work properly (read the newly updated database). Any help there would be great.

Thanks

I'm a bit confused by your post:) Everything indicates that you're using
Office 2004, but you refer specifically to the March 14 update which was
12.0.1 for Office 2008. Can you clarify, please?... And is the "another
computer" running the same version of the OS & Office? If not, what's the
difference? Is Leopard at 10.5.0, 10.5.1, or 10.5.2 ? have you repaired
permissions & restarted the Mac since whatever update you did?

Hi

Sorry it was the March 11th download of Office for 2004. Intel Mac run 10.5.2.

In fact I experienced this glitch with the excel document before I upgraded to Leopard on the weekend. Thought it was a one off, as I was able to open other excel spreadsheets no problem. And I was able to transfer it to another Mac same settings and open it and it was fine. I just sent it to some one who is running a Power PC on Leopard 10.5.2 and they cannot open it either, yet they had a copy of the document two weeks ago and it opened fine for them then.

IAs I mentioned I uninstalled this version of Office 11.4.1 a and reinstalled from the original disk and then before updating I was able to opened up the document. Yet when I went through and update it to the most recent version, it would not open!

Another possibility is that the file is really open. Can you see it in the
windows menu? If so, try selecting it and arranging the windows of the
active document.

It's not open Anywhere, I have searched High and low for it. We just get that box that says the document is opening up (it appears quickly and then disappears) and then nothing

I have the same problem with Excel 11.4.1. Some documents open and
others don't -- the open dialog just disappears. I can open them all
with Excel 11.2.5 running on the same machine.

If you were running 11.4.1 before, did you reinstall the software to get 'back' to 11.2.5? If so are you using Entourage? How ere you able to backtrack the entourage database so that it would read the later version of the database created by 11.4.1? If I can do that I will revert back to an earlier version of Office.

Thanks for your reports of this problem. Is there anyway anyone who's seen
this problem in 11.4.1 could send me a file that has the problem
([email protected])? It would be a huge help for us in investigating.

Thanks,

I'm not running Entourage. The install is a drag-and-drop from the cd,
so you should be able to move your current folder aside and drop an
older version in its place and test to see if you can open your excel
file.

I actually went back to an earlier version of Office X to see if that worked and it did. So now I will try what you suggest and see. From my little test I truly believe it is a bug in the update that was released.

Hi again,

We'd love to help resolve this issue but we haven't been able to reproduce
it. If anyone has a file they could share with us that shows this problem it
would really help. If you can, please send me a file at
(e-mail address removed).

Thanks,

I'm having the same problem with opening Excel files. Some open but most don't. I'm on an iMac with OS X 10.5.3 and using Excel 12.1.0. :frown: :frown:

The may be a problem if the worksheet tabs contain a slash (/) character. If
so, Open the file in a Windows version of Excel, change the tab names to
remove the slash and resave. Then it should open fine in Excel 2008. If this
is not the case, what are the specific symptoms you are seeing?

Hi James -

Unless I miss my guess, you're actually having a different problem, it just
has similar symptoms:)

The files that won't open are not opening when you double-click them in a
Finder window or on the Desktop, right? Try using the File> Open method from
within Excel & see if you don't have better results. Once opened, Save the
file (you may have to make a change in the file) - the double-click from
Finder should then be functional again.

Those files have at some time in their life been handled by certain email
software or browsers as attachments. In the encoding/decoding process their
file type has has been reset to an archaic code blocked by MS in the 12.1.0
update. There has been a lot of discussion on the issue in the Word & Office
groups as well as other sites, but Excel files are also affected.

The developers involved are (hopefully) in the process of updating their
software & an "official" position from MS should be out soon. In the
meanwhile, the File> Open method described above should help.

BTW - The other posts in the thread revolve around Office 2004 & an earlier
version of Mac OS. It would have been better to start a new thread by
posting a new message rather than jumping into this one:)

Hi,

I'm sorry, but I can't tell from this thread specifically what problem
you're having. Is it that certain files fail to open in Excel (regardless of
how you open them) or is it that certain files fail to open when
double-clicked in the Finder?

Thanks,

Pat

HI,
When I try to open a workbook that is very big (~300000 raws), the splash screen for excel showing that the document is opening appears and then takes more than 10 minutes to open or some times even does not open at all. In the first case is not perfect either because when I modify the file and try to save it the application crash. Yet if I go to another computer with office 2007 and open the same document it opens up just fine in a couple of minutes and work properly. The fact that surprise me is that the MAC hardware is far more powerful than the PC hardware (intel quadcore duo 3ghz w/16G Ram versus intel core duo 2ghz w/2G Ram).
Any idea about what could be happening?
thanks

We are experiencing the same problems as the excel forum and attach zipped copy of files for your use to maintain mac properties of files.

The macs are running 10.5.3 with Office for mac 2008 v12.1.0.

We have an old Dell PC that can open these documents no problem so it is a mac thing.

Both files open from within Excel, or by double click file option but just give the splash screen for an instant, but no document window opening up thereafter, just showing the excel drop down menus at the top of the screen and a nice blank screen below.

It would be useful to know what we can do, as at the moment all our Excel files suffer the same problem and this is not something we had expected in updating from Office 2004 to 2008.

Look forward to hearing from you

Hello,

I am having a similar problem. I have a new iMac running OS 10.5.3 and recently upgraded Office to 12.1.1. In Excel I can not open any previously saved .xls document (either by double clicking or the the File Open menu option). The Open dialouge box blinks quickly like others have mentioned and then nothing. Word works fine. I removed Office and reinstalled from the original install discs and then it works but if I upgrade at all the problems start.

Are you repairing disk permissions after applying the update?
