Problem with file on A: drive

F

Frank Saunders

I saved a word file onto my A:/ drive, but when I try and
open it I get the following msg:

The document name or path is not valid.

*Check the file permissions for the document or drive.

*Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document.

I'm not having much luck though.

Any help?

_Never - Ever - work in Word with a document on a floppy drive._

This means:
Never Save a file to a floppy using Word.
Never Open a file on a floppy using Word.
Never Edit a file on a floppy using Word.

i.e. When in Word, pretend that you don't have a floppy drive!

Using Word to edit files on a floppy disk is one of the easiest ways to
corrupt your documents. You should copy the file from the floppy to your
hard drive using Windows explorer or your MAC OS. Then use the file from
your hard drive. If you make changes, copy the changed file back to your
floppy disk (again from outside Word).

The WOPR add-in has a utility called Floppy-Copy. I am not sure of the URL
but it is listed on my
Web resources page at:
http://www.addbalance.com/word/wordwebresources.htm#WOPR

I believe that there is a good explanation of why this document corruption
happens on the MVPs site.
http://www.mvps.org/word

Your having saved and /or opened items on the floppy may have corrupted
them. You may want to look at <URL:
http://www.addbalance.com/document_corruption.htm> for ideas on what to do.

To change the behavior of looking at the floppy drive check your file
locations option.
Tools => Options => File Locations (tab)
and make sure that none of these are set for your A: drive.

Next try File => Open.
Is there any searching on A:?
If there is searching on A:, cancel or Esc. Then put a floppy in A:
Try File => Open again. Does it open A:\ as a file source?
If so, change it to your hard drive and open any document that you have on
your hard drive.

Exit Word. If asked about saving settings, answer "Yes."
Restart Word and then try File => Open again.

Dave Rado wrote something similar to the WOPR flopy-copy utility and it was
listed by Beth Melton in an answer a while back. What follows is quoted from
her answer:
'****Start code
Dim Button As Long
If Len(ActiveDocument.Path) = 0 Then
MsgBox "Please save the document on your hard disk first",
vbInformation
Exit Sub
ElseIf Not ActiveDocument.Saved Then
Button = MsgBox("Save first?" & vbCr & vbCr & "If you select 'No', "
& _
"the last saved version of this document " & _
"will be copied from your hard disk, " & _
"rather than the up-to-date version", vbYesNoCancel +
vbInformation)
Select Case Button
Case vbCancel
Exit Sub
Case vbYes
ActiveDocument.Save
End Select
End If
On Error Resume Next
If Left$(Application.Version, 1) = "8" Then
'Word 97
WordBasic.CopyFile FileName:=ActiveDocument.FullName, _
Directory:="A:\" & ActiveDocument.Name
Else
'Word 2000 and above
WordBasic.CopyFileA FileName:=ActiveDocument.FullName, _
Directory:="A:\" & ActiveDocument.Name
End If
If Err Then
MsgBox "Copy failed: " & vbCr & vbCr & _
Err.Description, vbInformation
Else
MsgBox "File succesfully copied ", vbInformation
'*** End code

If you do not know how to use this macro then take a look at this article
for instuctions:

=======================
End of quote
Hope this helps.
