Problems importing images in Office 2003 programs

Images pasted or inserted into Word and Publisher do not appear on screen -
all that are shown the outlines of the text box. In Word, the image will
appear in Print Preview and, at will show where they should when I return,
until I scroll down, when it disappears again. In Publisher the images do not
appear at all, even in Print Preview.
Is this a common problem and is there a solution?

It seems Garfield-n-odie was already on the case when I made my post. I
appreciate the advice and am now on my way. I wonder, though, what am I
losing reducing the acceleration? It seems to my under-educated mind that I
should have less problems with graphics with the accelerator running high,
not more.
