Project 2007 - Resource Calendar

S

Steve C.

Project 2007 crashes when I setup a special "WorkWeek" calendar for a
resource. Sometimes it crashes right away. Sometimes it takes a few minutes.
If I use the "Default" line on the "WorkWeek" tab Project 2007 does not
crash. This happens on 3 different PCs/laptops in my office. Has anyone run
into this problem? Suggetions?

Hi Steve,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Which version of 2007 are you using? Have you got SR1 installed? Are you
using Project Server?

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi Mike - Thanks!

I am using Project 2007 Professional. Yes. SP1 is installed. No. I am not
using Project Server yet. I am actually working on a MS Project 2007 training
course and came across this problem while creating slides for using the new
resource calendar features.

Hi Steve,

Try again with a new project and see if it still crashes. If it doesn't, I
would suspect a currupt file. You could try the suggestions in FAQ Item:
43. Handling project file corruption and/or bloat.

Hi Glenn,

I will take a look at FAQ item 43. We have tried it on different PCs and
laptops with consistant results. Just add a new resource and add one WorkWeek
item in the next available line under the default line. If it does not crash
right away scroll through that resource's calendar (change months) and it
will.

Since we all use the same PC/laptop manufacturer here in the office I think
I may try installing an eval copy at home to see if it happens on my Dell.
Try it yourself and let me know what happens.

Thanks.

But your project may be corrupt! Did you try it with a new project? If so,
and it still crashes, perhaps you could send it to me to have a look at.

Hi Mike,

Sorry for not being clear. I initially came across this problem using
project schedule we created for our 2003 class (reentering the data of course
so we can capture new screen shots). However, since that time two of my
colleagues get the same result on thier machines using the blank project that
opens when you launch Project. Simply create a resource and modify their
resource calendar. Don't even add a task.

Hi Steve,

I'm using Project Standard 2007 and cannot get the crashes you've
experienced. Perhaps someone using 2007 Pro in a stand alone situation
without a server can take this on board?

Mike, Jan,

Thanks for the feedback. Here is what I am doing:
Launch Project. Set 2/18/08 as a Holiday in the Standard Calendar. Switch to
Resource Sheet view and add a new resource "Resource 1". Open the calendar
for "Resource 1" and select the WorkWeek tab. In the row below the default
enter "45 Hr. Work Week". The "Start" date defaults to today's date and make
the "Finish" date whatever you wish - While entering this reply I entered
3/31/08. Select "Detail" and highlight Monday thru Friday. Change the "To"
time from 5:00PM to 6:00PM. Then select the last radio button to set the days
to the new working times. Close the details window. Now select several dates
to verify the new working time has been set for the dates selected, days
outside of the range are the standard working time, weekends are still
non-working days, and 2/18/08 is also a non-working day. At some point the
program stops responding and crashes. Sometimes right away. Other times it
takes a few minutes.

Hi Jan,

Then it must be how we have our machines configured since it is hapeening on
several different machines in our office. Time to start from scratch.

Thanks again!

Hi Steve,

Got it! Doing exactly what you did also crashes my Project Standard, so
you're not going mad :) I also tried entering a task first, but with the
same result. I thought it may be due to making the resource work longer
than the standard 40hr week, but I get the same crashing with a 16:00
finish. I certainly had to click around on the resource calendar several
times (up to 10ish) to provoke the crash. I tried entering the resource
first and no crashing occurred; however, on entering the holiday on the
standard project calendar and going back in to the resource calendar, it
crashed again. Let's see if Jan can reproduce it also.

Hello Mike and Steve,

Well, count another for the reproduction. I am using Project
Professional 2007 with SP-1 installed to a virtual pc running Windows
XP SP-2. I have consistently crashed 4 times in a row. No particular
idea why.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks Mike. Did you drop it on the Project 2007 connect site, if so,
I'll chime in with a "can reproduce" on the site.
