Pulling data from Excel or Access into Word

I have a Word report template that I use that currently pulls data from Excel
using linked fields. The template has a lot of linked and IF fields and
takes anywhere from 20-90 minutes to open depending on how many sites are
covered. The Excel workbook that the data is pulled from is created by
exporting an Access query into Excel (that process only takes a minute). Is
there some way that would be quicker for me to get the data from Access/Excel
into the Word template(individual fields, not lists or tables)? Is there a
setting or switch for fields that would speed up the process of populating
the linked fields?

20 to 90 minutes is far more time than it should take, but without more
information, it is not possible to suggest how to rectify the situation.
