I have 20 identical test stands and 35 tests of different test lengths that
can be run on any of the test stands. Is there any way I can setup project
so that it will look at the identical test stands as a pool and assign the
tests to the test stands automatically to minimize the overall project
timing. I have not found a way to make this work in Project2000 and would
consider project2003 if this capability is available.

Thanks

Hi,

This is feasible in all Project versions I know (even 98)
Assign 1 stand as a resource to each test
Do not enter links or dates, let Project frely schedule the tests
Enter 20 (or 2000%) as the max units for test stands
Tools, Resource Lveling, Level Now.

Thanks. This is very helpful. Some of my tasks are linked together (must
complete one test before the next test) but this should get me moving in the
right direction.

Hi,

There is no real problem about having tasks linked, it only decrease the
possibilities for "optimizing".
But it does work correctly

I guess the other question is how do I track which of my 20 testers is
running which test? If I understood your method we are basically creating one
stand and saying it can do the work of 20. That's great for leveling but no
so great for tracking. Thanks

Hi,

You can't have your cake and eat it! You start by saying your test stands
are identical so for planning purposes which one does which test is
irrelevant. The guy on the floor can just load any available stand with the
next test can't he? An dfoir tracking, when teh test is done, you just tell
Project.
