Saving in Word or Excel makes computer reboot

I am using Office 2003 and any time I try to save a document in Word or Excel
by clicking Save or Save As, my computer reboots itself and therefore does
not save. The programs work fine except for allowing me to save. I am on a
stand alone computer- no network. Can anyone help with fixing this problem?

Start by troubleshooting this issue in Word first. Typically, once you
find the problem in Word the resolution is the same for Excel.

See if the error occurs when you start Word using the /a switch. Go to
Start/Run and use the following command:

winword /a

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.

If the error doesn't occur then it's likely due to a third-party
global template/add-in. Go to Tools/Templates and Add-Ins and see if
there are any global templates or add-ins listed. If so they are
located in one of your Startup folders. The location of the
Word\Startup folder can be found under Tools/Options/File Locations
and the Office\Startup folder can be found in the Office installation
path..

Take a look in each folder and if you find more than one file move
them one at a time and try duplicating the error after each file is
moved out of the folder until you determine which one is causing the
problem.

The startup folder for Excel is the XLStart folder. You'll likely find
two: one in the Office installation path and one under your profile:
C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

Note the Application Data folder is hidden so make sure you are
viewing all files.

assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

Thanks Beth, but I tried all of this and it didn't help. Do you have any
other suggestions? I have already uninstalled the software and reinstalled,
but it didn't help. I still can't save anything in either program.

Thanks,
Laura M
