Saving txt from Word 'text boxes'

I have a Word document layed out using linked text boxes.. Does anyone
know of a way of saving/exporting as plain text from such a document.
'Save as' merely presents me with a blank document as output.
Surely Word can handle something as simple as this.
At the moment the only solution appears to be copying and pasting..
