Schedule 'from' date in conflict

Can someone explain to me why on the
tools/options/schedule tab you can select to have all new
tasks start from the current date.. however in Project
Information, you have to specify whether they start from
the project start or end date? The project information
overrides the options information, which therefore seems
to be totally redundant.

??

Thanks

Hi Fiona,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

The settings in Tools/Options... tell Project when to start a new task when
you are entering its name so that you can see it in the Gantt Chart view.
For example, if your project is a year or so through and you want to enter
new tasks, you can make them appear at today's date rather than going all
the way back to the beginning of the project. It's planned start date will
then be determined from the finish of its predecessor task when you insert
the logical links. All tasks will then start as soon as possible. However,
if you set the project to schedule from the Project Finish Date, then all
tasks will be set to begin as late as possible based on the logic links.
The latter setting is not a recommended setting as all tasks will use up all
their slack and you will lose any flexibility that you might have had.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :))

Thanks Mike.

Unfortunately you haven't answered my question. I understand the different methods of scheduling tasks.

My question relates to the two different locations that are accessible to decide how new tasks will be scheduled. Using the tools/options/schedule tab, you have the options as you described below, ie using the project start date, or the current date. However, in the Project Information section, you don't have the same options. You are limited to only scheduling from the start or end date. What I am finding, is I have chosen under the tools/options/schedule tab to have all tasks scheduled from the current date. However, they are being scheduled from the start of the project, as this is what's ticked in the Project Information section. My dilema is that the project information overrides the tools/options/schedule tab options.

Hi Fiona,

I think the answer lies in your use of the word "scheduled". The setting
under tools/Options tells Project where to start the task on the Gantt Chart
for your convenience - is not telling Project anything about when to
"schedule" the task.
