Task: Fixed end date AND Start date depends on finish date of pred

Hi all,

I have a task with a fixed end date. Its starting date depends on the finish
date of its predecessor. I want the duration of the task (note: not the
predecessor) to be variable.

How can I do this?

Thank you!

With rare exceptions, how can a task with a variable start date have a fixed
end date? Tasks produce a specific quantity of an output. Once it starts,
it isn't finished until all of the required output has been achieved and so
its duration is whatever time is required to produce the needed output - you
can't just arbitrarily quit before you done everything that is required
simply because you've hit a certain date in the calendar. Your situation
with a fixed end date says in effect "Our project requires 1000 widgets but
if we've only done 100 by March 1st we'll say that's good enough and stop
work on them." While there may be a few things in the real world that
behave like that, there aren't very many of them. Are you sure what you are
calling a "fixed end date" is not really a deadline that is very important
for you not to miss?
