task start date changes when I update task

We are midway through a project. It seems that this issue just started to
happen. When I update % completed for a simple task, Project ignores
predecessors assigned to this task and moves the start date of the task to
the start date of the project (last year). I am at a loss to what I have
done that is causing this.
-update % complete within a task
-warning pops up that "you are about to change the start date to before the
project starts"

My work around is to apply a do not start before date, but that is not an
effecient method.

Please help...

In Project > Project Information, check the Status Date.

You might also want to look at Tools > Options > Calculation, and examine
the options you have checked and unchecked.
