Tasks in Parallel

Hi,

1. I have three phases (Construction, Code Review, and Unit Testing).
2. The two phases (Code Review and Unit Testing) should run in
parallel with Construction
3. The start date and end date for this trunk is from 1-Aug-2008 to 7-
Aug-2008 respectively
4. There are two resources; R1 would handle development, R2 would
handle code review and testing
5. The efforts are perfect for construction phase

I would like to if I could accomplish this:-
6. Need to add a task Code review and assign the start date from 1-Aug
to 7-Aug and assign this task to R2 without changing the parent effort
duration
7. Need to add another task Unit Testing and assign the start date
from 1-Aug to 7-Aug and assign this task to R2 without changing the
parent effort duration

I am using MS Project 2003.

It is unclear what you mean by "without changing the parent effort duration"

Duration is a specific term in project. It means how long a task goes on.
effort is also a specific term, but not well defined in Project. You could
make a case that it equals work or that it means resources.

If effort = resource and duration is duration then effort duration would
equal work.
And the answer is that if you make a non-zero unit assignment of a resource
to a task, then the total work will increase.

In that case the answer to your question is no. If you meant something
different by your question, then the answer may be different too.

Hi,
Thank you and sorry for the confusion.

here is the sample:
1. Only one resource
Project 0.8 wks
Release 1 0.8 wks
Trunk 1 0.8 wks

This is fine and this is what is expected.

2. Multiple resource: I would want to run other phases parallely and
assign the task to another resource.

Project 1 wk
Release 1 1 wk
Trunk 1 1 wk
Code review 9 hours added and assigned
to different resource

Problem 1:
- The total duration for trunk, release and project should not be
increased. this is becuase the tasks are done in parallel and is
assigned to different resource

- Unable to set the start and end date for code review as the trunk
start date and trunk end date. A constraint start no earlier than 1-
Aug is set for this task. When the end date is set to 7-Aug, the
duration for the task spikes automatically.
