upgrade to Groove 2007 from Grooove 3.1 fails ... Miserably!

R

RichS

I had Groove 31 installed and use it daily for all my work ...

I installed Groove 2007 as part of the Office 2007 Enterprise ...
Install is OK for other Office components.

But, when I fire up Groove, it says:
"account upgrade unsuccessful" "Reboot required"

Reboot doesn't help. Found some folk who solved the problem in the beta
using Registry massage and GrooveClean. Tried it in total desperation. No
help.

I've been using Groove for YEARS! Happily upgraded many times. Never seen
anything this stupid!

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the commiseration ...
Although in the past Groove was not perfect, it did work well and in 4 years
of pretty much daily use including 3 upgrades that I can rememember, it never
left my hanging like I am this minute ... can't uninstall, can't activate,
can't access my message history, can't to anything except post to this forum
.....

RichS,

While I can't be sure what might have happend to your upgrade attempt I can
offer a way to solve the problem, assuming that you have an existing 3.x
system still running or can get back to a running 3.x system.

1) Get 3.x system running on a different system other than the one you are
tying to upgrade. If you need to get it running on a system that it is not
currently installed on, export the account file and use it to create a new
install on the new machine.

2) Use the "Get Workspace" feature under the right-click of each workspace
that is in your "Not on this computer" list.

3) Wait for all of the work spaces you care about to finish fetching.

4) Clean up the machine with the failed upgrade.
a. Use Grooveclean

b. Uninstall via Add-Remove

c. Delete the Groove folder under your Program Files folder

d. Depending on the history of the machine, find the folder tree that
contains "groovedevice.xss", if it still exists, and delete the tree at the
parent level "groove". It is under "C:\Documents and Settings\[user
profile]\Local Settings\Application Data\" on newer systems. Depending on
the status of the upgrade attempt it will be under
"..\Microsoft\OFFICE\Groove\System". In this example, delete the folder
"Groove".

e. In the registry, find and delete the following nodes if they exist:
- HKEY_CURRNET_USER\Software\Groove Networks, Inc.
- HKEY_CURRNET_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Groove
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Groove
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\GrooveSDK

5) The machine should be nice and clean now. Repeat steps 1 - 3 on the
machine with the failed upgrade. Be sure to use the same version of Groove
that is running on the other machine.

6) Once the machine that requires upgrading is running and happy with 3.x,
attempt the Groove 2007 upgrade. With a clean, fresh install of 3.x it
should be smooth.

All of this is not to say that a Clean insatall is required, but that I
suspect that something in your 3.x install was corrupted and not properly
handled or detected as such.

You are welcome. I'm glad I could offer my assistance. Responding to your
questions, I was assuming that either;

1 - You had or could get a 2nd machine running using the same Groove account
and would use the 1st machine to get the spaces onto the 2nd machine.

- or -

2 - You had a recent backup (within the last 60[?] days) of your account and
could fetch the spaces from the other members.

I do not recall what will happen to your contacts, but yes, you are correct
in assuming that your message history will be lost with this process.

If neither 1 or 2 are true you may be in rough shape regarding your account
moving forward. You will have to create a new account and get invited into
all of the spaces that you need to regain access to. The Cleaning process
should still apply in all cases.

Well, I certainly have my account backup, and almost all workspaces are
recoverable from other users, so I'm not too bad off there -- that's you
option#2

I still don't understand your option#1 .. Groove doesn't start on my current
machine, so I don't see how my 2nd machine can fetched from it.

Thanks again, I will try option #2 ...
- but if you know any magic for rescuing my message history before I
destroy it ... that would be great.

Your message history is going to be just that HISTORY.

My wife and I have been using Groove since it's first beta and the keepers
of the keys have always been unsympathetic to the concept that a user might
want to back up their messages or migrate/synchronize the message history
between workstations.

The only customers they care about are running Groove server (a product that
I'm not entirely certain still exists now that the product has been absorbed
into the Office Suite). In the case of the centralized Groove server, I
believe your messages would be stored there, though that doesn't help you
much unfortunately.
