Why does it ask if I want to save changes I did not make?

My Word 2002 always asks me if I want to save changes I made EVEN when
I did not make any changes. Even if I just opened a document to read
something. IF I actually made changes, fine! But, over time, always
being asked if I want to save changes I did NOT make gets tiresome. Can
anyone address this?

(Watch for my next posted question. I've been under the impression no
one can help with that one, but now I'm not certain.
