Why won't Word let me save versions, or show them?

I am trying to save a document in Word using different versions by clicking
File, then Versions. After doining this I should be able to open the
document and see the different versions in order to compare and merge them.
However, I am unable to do so. Do I need to change something on my computer
in order to do this? HELP!

You are advised not to trust your entire doc to Word's Versions feature. Do
Save As.... #1, #6, #12, etc, and compare different files instead. Versions
is very complex, tends to corrupt easily, and if 1 little thing goes wrong,
you lose everything.

Also,
If you are using compare and merge versions and you have your versions all
saved in one file, then Word's help tells you that you need to export one of
the versions before trying to merge or compare.
