Word won't save

Word won't save via and method: save, save as, or by closing the document and
answering yes to the save prompt. I've read the earlier posts and downloaded
security update WindowsXP-KB908531-v2-x86-ENU as suggested but the problem
persists.

This is a full version that I've been using for years and this is a new
development. When I try to save using any method, nothing at all happens. I'm
not locked up, I get no error messages, it just won't save or do anything.
I do get a prompt to save the changes to template 'normal' when closing word
(after I've declined to save the document) which I have consistantly
declined.
I tried uninstalling Office XP Pro and reinstalling it--> no effect. I tried
the update that was suggested--> no effect. Also, I tried to convert the
document to a .pdf but that failed also--> the message said I had to
unprotect the document; it didn't seem to be protected.

Is this a full version or did you download the trial version and now it's
time to pay for it?

Oh yes. This is Word 2002 sp3. And Excel will save a workbook.
I just got a pop-up: "Saving the Autorecovery file is postponed for document
1".

There are a couple of things that can cause this, including conflicting add-ins and some Word settings.

In Tools=>Options=>Save turn off the 'Autorecover' option then close Word. From Start=>Run search for all files using

~$*.*;*.tmp

and recycle them then restart Word to see if the error still occurs.
If so, try holding the contrl key when starting Word and see if you can open/create then save a file.

It worked! I searched for those tmp files, recycled them, and now I can save
documents once again. Thank you! Thank you!

Hi Arbon,

What version of Word and what version of Windows?
Do you have any add-ins in Word?

Hello,

At the risk of sounding dumb... what do you mean by "recycle them"??

thanks,

Or... if you're like many users, you never actually see/recognize the
"recycle bin" icon because a) it's on the desktop and your desktop is always
covered by other stuff, b) the icon doesn't actually look like any recycle
bin I've ever seen; in Vista, it looks to me like a plastic cup filled with
ice cubes, with a poorly displayed recycling symbol in blue (green would be
better IMO) on it, c) you're too busy looking for the "trash can", or d)
you're accustomed to simply pressing the Delete key in the file manager
(Windows Explorer).

At the end of the day, it's all just jargon. :)

But, I guess "recycle" is appropriate since the net effect is that you're
making that disk space available to be used as something other than the
files you're deleting/recycling.

I'm having the same problems with Word 2003, SP3 installed. Tried the
suggestion above with no results. Any other ideas?

I can't save a new document or edit an existing document and save or
save as that document.

I'm having a similar problem with one of a our computers, but unfortunately
none of the solutions here seems to solve it. There are no problems opening
documents but saving them just isn't not possible. Nothing happens when
trying.

One thing that might differ here is that the problem only occurs for one
user (domain user). If I log on as another user there are no troubles saving
any documents. Therefore it is most likely that the problem originates from
the user profile. I'd rather not give this user a new profile (lots of
personal settings), so what can I do... Any ideas?

The user's home folder is on a network drive, but it doesn't matter in this
case because he never gets the chance to choose a location at all. The Save
As-window never pops up.

The problem only occurs in MS Word (Office 2003 Sp3). No other programs are
affected, not even the other Office applications...

To clarify... have you tried starting Word in Safe Mode, and does Word work
correctly when doing so?

That suggests two possible causes and remedies:

1. Corrupted normal.dot. Rename it or delete it, and see if the problem is
fixed. Location can be found in Tools - Options - File Locations - User
templates.

2. Corrupted registry entry, usually the Data key. If the preceding doesn't
fix the problem, rename or delete the Data key, which can be found here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word

Note: edit the registry with caution.

If neither of those fix the problem, the usual 3rd source is a misfiring
add-in. Remove add-ins one at a time to see if the problem magically goes
away with one of them.

Unfortunately none of those suggestions solved the problem. On the other
hand I think that I've found what is causing it now. Adobe Acrobat 8.1 has
been installed on this computer and after uninstalling it, saving documents
works fine for all users... Is there a known issue with this version of
Acrobat and Word?
