What are you trying to rename the extension to? From what to what?

Don't change the extension. (the part after the dot) If the extension
doesn't appear( is hidden), you may change that by unchecking the box
for that in Control Panel, Folder Options, View.

Windows Explorer is set to display file extensions (which is goodness). When
you rename a file you need to include the file extension, .doc or .xls, and
make sure that you do not change the extension part. Or, when you are
renaming, highlight all the file name except the extension and type in your
new name. This will allow it to keep the original file extension.

This warning message is telling you that you are removing or changing the
..doc or .xls extension and that if you continue, Windows will not
automatically know what application to use to open the file in the future.
