outlook 2000 opens then freezes

I am still using an older computer that has served me well (until recently).
I am running Windows ME and Office 2000. I am having a problem with Outlook
and have tried everything I can to fix it to no avail.

It is not easy to explain what is going on so please bear with me.

It started yesterday when I could not open Outlook at all. A google search
provided one solution - rename your mailbox.pst file to mailbox.old and
restart Outlook. I did that and Outlook did restart but I lost alll my old
contacts and emails. I also used Scanpst.exe to scan/repair all my pst files
and found nothing was corrupted.

On another post, it was suggested that I start Outlook by going to run:
outlook.exe. I did this too and Outlook opened and loaded some new emails
but then froze up.

I have also tried opening Outlook in the safe mode, but that does not work
either.

I tried creating a new shortcut. That didn't help either. As it stands
now, when I try to open Outlook, it opens but then freezes. I have to go to
the task manager to terminate the program.

I have read other posts that suggest that the size of the .pst file might be
getting too large. My mailbox.pst file is currently at 493 MB; and my
archive.pst is at 362 MB. It was suggested that compression of these files
might be then answer, but to do that, you first have to be able to open
Outlook and use some of the tools, but I can't even open Outlook to do this.

So, I am stuck and don't know what to do next. I know - buy a new computer,
which I have determined that I should do, but even when I do that, I will
want to imprt my .pst files into my newer version of Outlook, so I will
probably be looking for some help on that in the future.

Thanks in advance for your help.
