Why does text appear outside my text box as well as inside?

This is a new one! When I draw a text box, a new paragraph indicator appears
outside the box along with an anchor. When I enter text in the box, the same
text appears on the line of the new paragraph.

Yep, that's definitely a new one :) Which version of Word are you seeing this
with? Is it happening in only the one document?

Hi =?Utf-8?B?TGVzdGVyQg==?=,
I'm using Office 2003 SP2. Yes - only the one doc.
In that case, I'd say the internal structures of the document, where graphics are
managed, have been damaged. This seems to be a problem with Word 2002 and,
especially, Word 2003. Usually, copying everything except the last paragraph mark
to a new document does a reasonably good job of recovery...

Thanks for that. I woprked around it by creating the graphics in another doc,
grouping and pasting it into the problem child. Then Word crashed anyway -
during the recovery, Word repaired the document (according to Word). At any
rate, I'm up and working! Thanks again for the help!

We've just had a report of this happening as well. The copying to another
document didn't work for us, so hopefully MS will get this added to their bug
report.

I had this problem today as well - I found that just deleting the last
paragraph marker in the document solved the problem.

Well, it obviously hasn't been fixed yet because it's happened to me, too.
As well as the "outside and inside" problem I find that another text box
several pages away in the document can be affected, the text either being
deleted or overwritten. Because it can happen on a completely different
page, I don't necessarily find out about it until much later. And if I
insert a new text box it has my last text already in it - if I then delete it
then the text in the original text box is deleted too. Maddening! I have
cut and pasted in several different ways, thought I had solved the problem
then found I hadn't.

Did you try the fix originally suggested by Cindy Meister? If you suspect
that the blank document template is damaged, too, start by renaming the
normal.dot file (or normal.dotm if you are running Word 2007). The next time
Word starts, a new copy of normal.dot with factory default settings will be
created. Then copy the problem document, except for the final paragraph mark
(Ctrl+A, Shift+Left arrow, Ctrl+C), into a fresh blank document.

Thanks for v. quick reply. I had already tried this yesterday and it didn't
work. Have done it again today and - fingers crossed! - it seems to have
done the trick. The problem wasn't with normal.dot as it didn't happen with
new files. Motto: If at first you don't succeed, try try try again - on
another day!

I'm using Word 2000 and am unable to delete the last paragraph marker. What
do you do in that case?
